Who are you if not beautiful
Glycol’s debut album, “Who Are You If Not Beautiful is a powerhouse collection of Meanjin’s underground sound piled together. The album takes you through a journey of mental pain, drug abuse, violent surroundings, abusive relationships, and the recovery journey behind it all. It aims to speak to the youth and the common problems the youth faces in the scene, but not just to bring reliability but clarity for how to continue, heal, and recover.
1. intro
Lyrics:
person 1) Fuck it, I mean how do any of us start off?
person 2) That’s true.
person 1) We are born, and from the second the light hits our eyes, we are given a name.
person 2) Yeah, it’s like our first form of identity is just put upon us.
person 1) no choice.
person 2) Ha, no fucking choice.
person 1) no nothing.
person 2) we are just put on this earth, witnessing all these things with our eyes, seeing all this crap. I swear man the shit i’ve seen, it just makes you like spiral, like question it all like diving.
person 1) diving down the rabbit hole.
person 2) Dude, right? and like, at some point I kinda resent my parents for putting me on this earth.
person 1) We all go through that, I think.
person 2) haha right? But like I dunno, I just like. I just feel stuck.
person 1) of course
person 2) like I just feel fucking stuck, and I start associating with the wrong people.
person 1) get into all sorts of crowds, find yourself with all these different kinds of people.
person 2) not the best people, and like I’ll tell them man, i’ll tell them so, I won’t go and like i’ll say it’s so but fuck man I can’t.
Person 1) Yeah, I understand. So what do you do?
person 2) huh I dunno. just gotta heal, on your own.
Person 1) Take the first step. blossom into something better.
Person 2) Yeah, like grow.
Person 1) Should we go get some food?
person 2) fuck yeah man.
person 1) Chuck on some music.
INTRO is the first track. on the album, the stepping stone, and the layout of everything that’s about to unfold. You follow a conversation between two people reflecting on their past tribulations, these past traumas about to be spilled out in full through the songs across the album.
2.NAME
Lyrics:
The sun all tastes, and this shit all tastes, and the sun all tastes. Alright now.
You’ll never know how far I’d go. The sun don’t talk, you don’t say!
HEY! HEY! HEY! HEY! HEY! HEY!
Outta the flames we’ve got to go! Into the womb we’ve got to go!
No time to waste, we’ve! Into the womb we’ve got to go! YEAH!
HEY! HEY! HEY! HEY! HEY! HEY!
YEAH!
HEY! HEY! HEY! HEY! HEY! HEY!
Outta the flames we’ve got to go! Into the womb we’ve got to go!
No time to waste, we’ve! Into the womb we’ve got to go! YEAH!
NAME is the first song of the album, coming smashing out of the gates. It follows the confusion of birth with lyrics often not being cohesive but more nodding to something with the intention to push that confusion, the song speaks on senses, the first gift they are given, each sentence often cutting off the next. The title “NAME” alludes to the first form of identity that is put upon you, your name, and that this is the story of finding identity.
3.your eyes
Lyrics:
Take your eyes and I’ll save this town.
And I’ll take your eyes, and I’ll save this town.
YOUR EYES! YOUR EYES! YOUR EYES!
Impass the bomb, it’s all okay.
Impass the bomb, it’s all okay.
Impass the bomb, it’s all okay.
Impass the bomb, it’s all okay.
LETS GO!
YOUR EYES takes you through the feeling of experiencing the world in all its beauty and horror. Your eyes are your most powerful sense, and what you see and witness will stick with you.
4. DIVE
Lyrics:
I’m selling the keys, though. Indefinite seats, though. Fibonacci sequence.
spiraling mind 3 to the 5.
So take a seat, though, to the believers. believers’ belief, though.
spiraling mind 3 to the 5.
aye to see if you know, the truth it holds, the truth untold
hell yeah.
DIVE! x7
I’m selling the keys though, counting the teeth though. Seeing if it’s real or not.
spiraling mind 3 to the 5.
Is it better to kill or? Is it better to believe? Is it better to believe or not?
spiraling mind 3 to the 5.
aye to see if you know, the truth it holds, the truth untold
hell yeah.
DIVE! x7
I’m selling the keys, though. Indefinite seats, though. Fibonacci sequence.
spiraling mind 3 to the 5.
DIVE is a song about trying to find the meaning to life, after all you have seen with your eyes, all you want is a reason for the madness, inherently, it ends up making you spiral more. The more you think about it, the more you don’t understand.
5. VEGEM!TE
LYRICS:
I can never believe that you never wanna see, and I don’t wanna.
And you can never believe that I don’t wanna see and I don’t wanna.
And I can never believe that you don’t wanna see, and I don’t wanna
And you can never believe that I don’t wanna see and I don’t wanna.
It’s okay! It’s okay! It’s okay!
I can never believe that you never wanna see, and I don’t wanna.
you can never believe that I don’t wanna speak and I don’t wanna.
And I can never believe that you don’t wanna see, and I don’t wanna
And you should never have conceived, and I don’t wanna be, and I don’t wanna.
It’s okay! It’s okay! It’s okay!
VEGEMITE is an homage to the Australian tradition of passing down this spread from family to family and generation to generation. The song serves as a response to the feeling of resentment towards being born or put on this earth, leaving an unfinished thought at the end of each line. The phrase "I don’t wanna" is repeated throughout, and it is only on the final line that the full expression is revealed: "I don’t wanna BE." This conveys direct anger towards their parents, suggesting that they should never have conceived them. The lyrics reflect the pain of existence and the feeling that it might be better to cease living altogether.
6. stuck
LYRICS:
I wanna be something more than I am. Horse pills for those who couldn’t care less.
Your fear of looking dumb is holding you back. We were born in your world.
But you will die in,
OURS!
So darken your eyes and sharpen your knives, and run it along your thighs, and bleach your mind you're so nice I needa get high again but I’m stuck.
STUCK is about becoming stuck in the scene and its negative perspectives on existence. It touches on drug use, self-harm, and an overall confusion of purpose. its finally finding a group of people who feel the same as you but only on feeding on the bad parts of life.
I’LL SAY ITS SO
LYRICS:
I know it’s hard to hold on.
I know it’s hard to let go to what you once had, but you know it’s not what you could have.
I’ll say it’s so, I won’t go.
I’ll say it’s so, I won’t go
I’ll say I don’t know
I’ll say it’s so, I won’t go
I’ll say I don’t know
I know it’s hard to hold on.
I know it’s hard to let go to what you once had, but you know it’s not what you could have.
I’ll say it’s so, I won’t go.
I’ll say it’s so, I won’t go
I’ll say I don’t know
I’ll say it’s so, I won’t go
I’ll say I don’t know
I’ll say it’s so is a striking and caring display of friendship, taking you through the moments of push and pull, good and bad. The idea that you want to be there for this person always and promise you wont go.
UNK
Impass the bong, it’s all okay, and you will never feel the same
The feelings only partially mutual, so come and get your arsenal kitted up.
Impass the bong, it’s all okay, and you will never feel the same
The feelings only partially mutual, so come and get your arsenal kitted up.
kitted up, kitted up, kitted up.
Impass the bong, it’s all okay, and you will never feel the same
The feelings only partially mutual, so come and get your arsenal kitted up.
UNK is the word PUNK without the P, insinuating that something is missing. This is the breaking point for the album, all the drugs and negative ideals has become so strong that its not just outwards but now negativity towards eachother in the group the people you bonded with over hate. This hate and belief of who is right has pushed itself to violence.
I CANT
I can’t i can’t i cant help you anymore,
so you're pinned, so come on and come with us.
So you're pinned, so come on.
Say your name to me.
i can’t help you if I can’t help myself.
You can’t help me if I can’t help myself.
complex error error fabricated weather weather, sweater never gets better tonal anomaly. Or maybe I’m hearing it clearer now, but the ringing never stops.
It was you, not sure who. The odyssey of impurity. The odyssey of impurity
it was you, not sure who. The odyssey of impurity The odyssey of impurity
I can’t I can’t I can’t help you anymore,
so you're pinned, so come on and come with us.
So you're pinned, so come on.
I could sense the disappointment from your buttery tone and lowered chin. I guess we are foes again. But I can’t help you anymore.
I CANT is the point of separation in the album, the separation from the people you surrounded your self with and the negative ideologies. the intention was always to help people but now you realize you cant help anyone until you help yourself.
BLOSSOM
Blossom a radioactive cut into, into stars.
Taking it back to move it a little forth.
Taking it back to move it a little forth.
Taking it back to move it a little forth.
Taking it back to move it a little forth.
Heal all alone, Heal all alone.
Blossom a radioactive cut into, into scars.
Heal all alone, Heal all alone.
Blossom is the most important song on the album, this is a song all about healing. all that hate you surrounded yourself with is radioactive and can spread person to person but at the same time something so powerful can turn into something just as a beautiful such as a star. All cuts will heal over and some point its your choice to say whether that scar or pain of the past defines you or to say its just apart of your skin and your more than your past pain. Taking the step to heal is a choice that is made on your own and it should be empowering to do so. Healing will feel like 2 steps forward 1 step back it’s slow and can only be done by you but like a flower it will look like nothing for a long time until suddenly, you blossom. you will become fragile and beautiful in a world filled with thorns and poisen.
